Tetso College held its 6th Graduation Ceremony 2024 on July 30, 2024 at Lorin Hall with L. Mongkum Jamir, President, Business Association of Nagas (BAN) and as the commencement speaker for the morning session and Prof. Glenn T Thong, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, Meriema as the commencement speaker for the evening session.
L. Mongkum Jamir in his speech shared his journey as one of the pioneering entrepreneurs in the telecom sector of Nagaland, highlighting the importance of perseverance, leadership, and stewardship. Quoting that “science creates technology, technology creates commerce, commerce creates economy and economy creates politics,” he stated that everything is interlinked with each other and emphasized on the need of creating wealth. Accentuating the common misconception of the Nagas wherein money is considered a sin and creation of wealth a taboo, the speaker cautioned that without vigilance, there are those who might attempt to overpower or undermine us.
Mongkum Jamir, who is also the Managing Director of SymBios Creations Pvt. Ltd., deliberated on the necessity of entrepreneurship, encouraging the students to create jobs rather than seeking them. Stating that the ethos of creating wealth and fostering entrepreneurship should be the central economic strategy for dispelling misconceptions and embracing wealth creation, he also mentioned the philosophy of the MD of Wipro,
Azim, “We cannot distribute poverty, we need to create wealth to uplift the economy.”
Meanwhile, Prof. Glenn T Thong recounted his experiences and aspirations from his student days. He underscored the importance of hard work and dedication in achieving success. By citing his friend’s perseverance in clearing the UPSC exam on the seventh attempt, Professor Thong emphasized the significance of unwavering determination in reaching one’s goals.
Prof. Thong also addressed the changing job landscape. He contrasted the past, with an abundance of government positions and a limited pool of qualified applicants, with the present, characterized by a surplus of job seekers vying for a smaller number of vacancies, resulting in heightened unemployment and fierce competition. Nevertheless, he reassured the students of the existence of numerous opportunities beyond
government employment, encouraging them to explore diverse sectors. Prof. Thong reiterated the value of hard work and its potential to propel one towards excellence.
Addressing the graduates, Professor Thong recognized them as the bright minds of the contemporary era. Citing the life of Thomas Edison, he exhorted the students to exhibit unwavering commitment in the pursuit of their goals and dreams. He advocated for continuous effort and perseverance until their aspirations are realized. Professor Thong further emphasized the responsibility of students to engage in activities that address social issues and problems. He highlighted their potential to contribute to positive environmental change by raising awareness about potential solutions such as renewable energy, sustainable development, ecological restoration, and recycling.
In the welcome address, Kvulo Lorin, Director, Tetso College, expressed his gratitude to the students and the faculty for persevering throughout their academics. He advised the students to use time wisely, find a mentor/role model and be positive and hopeful in a pessimistic society. He also urged the students to never stop learning, stating that it is not words but actions which would define a students identity.
Dr. Hewasa L Khing, Principal, Tetso College, expressed sincere gratitude to the students and their families for their perseverance throughout their academic journey. She underscored the profound significance of culture and society in shaping individuals. Dr. Khing also emphasized the value of the degrees earned by the students and encouraged them to translate their aspirations into actions characterized by ethical
conduct and practice. Moreover, she inspired the students to identify positive role models who could influence their future paths. Specifically addressing the female students, the Principal encouraged them to cultivate self-confidence and self-esteem, urging them to transcend traditional roles and limitations.
The morning programme was chaired by Dr. Nouzhienino Peseyie, HoD, Psychology and invocation led by Talinungsang, Asst. Dean, School of Computer Science and IT while the evening session was chaired by Dr. Rosy Tep, HoD, English and invocation led by Yhunwalo Lorin, Manager, Support and Services.
The class valedictorians were Kajal Kumary, BBA Topper 2024, NU and Kezevinuo Rio, Linguistics Topper 2024, NU. Altogether, a total of 531 students graduated this year.
